What Makes Mountain House Foods Different from others
“Freeze-Dried” or Dehydrated Foods?

The biggest difference is that ONLY Mountain House prepares and cooks their freeze-dried foods with all or most of the food components and seasonings together, just like you would when cooking at home. Experts consider this superior because the fresh vegetables, meats, seasoning, and sauces simmer together. This provides a savory “just cooked” flavor. After cooking, the foods are quickly flash-frozen to around 40° below zero. Finally, they place the food trays into a specially designed freezing-drying vacuum chamber where incredibly the foods go from the frozen stage to the dry "freeze-dried" stage without ever passing through the liquid stage. The result is that the foods look like fresh frozen except 98% of their moisture has been removed. This entire process is known as “sublimation”.

The benefit to you is that Mountain House Foods:

Taste Fresher. Freeze dried foods, like fresh frozen foods, retain virtually all their fresh-food taste and nutritional content. Freeze-drying removes the water, not the natural flavor, vitamins or nutrients like dehydrated or wet-pack cans do. You’ll enjoy Gourmet Tasting foods you whole family will love.

Have the Look & Aroma of Fresh Frozen Foods. Freeze dried foods maintain their original size, shape and texture, unlike dehydrated foods, which shrink and shrivel due to high-temperature processing. Freeze-drying removes water under low temperatures (typically a maximum of 100 to 130 degrees F), which keeps intact the moisture channels and food fibers. Just add water, and in minutes every fresh food detail returns. Kids love the “normal” look and taste as compared to dehydrated foods.

Weigh Dramatically Less. Freeze dried foods have 98% of their water removed. This reduces the food's weight about 90%. Mountain House foods are so lightweight and compact you can carry several days worth of food in a 6 can box. Ideal for disaster evacuations or for long term emergency food reserves for families, businesses and government agencies.

Reconstitute Faster. Mountain House Freeze-dried foods reconstitute over twice as fast or more than other brands and up to 10 TIMES FASTER times than dehydrated foods.

Stay Fresh Longer. Mountain House freeze-dried foods have an incredible SHELF-LIFE UP TO 25 YEARS in #10 cans (7 years in their backpacking pouches), without deterioration or spoilage. NO OTHER STORAGE FOODS STORE LONGER...PERIOD. When amortized over their expected 25 years storage life (assuming you never need to use them and they have been properly stored), they are the LEAST EXPENSIVE to own. You would need to rotate and repurchase other storage foods 3 to 6 times over the same period of time which will SAVE you time, hassle and MONEY.

The Department of Homeland Security & the American Red Cross has recommended every family in America have a backup food reserve in case of natural disaster or terrorism. Mountain House freeze-dried foods are ideal to meet these recommendations. We offer several specially designed units to simplify your preparation Pre-Made Food Units Think of your survival food reserves as an "Insurance Policy" you can eat. In todays uncertain world, it pays to be prepareded one year to early than one day to late. Be safe… Be Prepared!

Mountain House packs their long storing foods in double enameled #10 cans to preserve the food's flavor, texture, color, and nutrients. To “double” ensure freshness and prevent the food from turning rancid, an oxygen absorber packet is placed in each can. (This product is not harmful to your health, but is not meant to be eaten. Simply discard after opening can).

Now in contrast, ALL other food companies use blends of dry powered mixes and seasonings then combine them with either dehydrated and/or freeze-dried ingredients. So is this bad? No, not at all. It’s simply a less expensive process to mixed dry components with a few freeze-dried items. Unfortunately, this means that most other brands of storage foods require hot boiling water and take much longer to reconstitute (10 to 60 minutes vs. 5 to 8 minutes for Mountain House).

Mountain House foods go through a more time consuming and expensive freeze-drying process. In addition, most of their foods include REAL MEATS like tender chicken, beef, pork and danish ham rather that less expensive meat substitutes like textured vegetable protein (TVP). Surprisingly, their gourmet line of foods cost about the same or less that other brands. They currently are the #1 Selling Backpacking & Camping foods sold in the USA today. That says a lot about their quality & premium taste.
